The Rancho is located close to the village of Punta Banco, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) south of Golfito, on the southwest coast of Costa Rica. Below you’ll find directions by car, by bus and by plane.
By Car
It is quite a task to get out of San José, because traffic is probably a little more hectic than you are used to. Get a good map of Costa Rica and then it still is a kind of maze. Go down the Avenida Central in the direction of San Pedro and then follow the signs to Cartago. Before you reach Cartago switch to the signs saying San Isidro and if all goes well you are driving into the mountains (don’t forget to get enough gas).
The road through the mountains has some risky sections, don’t overtake too many cars here, because this road is called the ‘Cerro de la Muerte’ or the ‘Road of Death’! After climbing to about 3400 m (11000 feet), where it does get cold and rainy, it is now time to go down. Don’t drive too fast and watch out for fallen & falling rocks! And, be careful, because we have had some slippery experiences here!
Once in San Isidro, just go straight ahead to the next town, Palmar Norte. You will pass the chemical pineapple fields of Del Monte, where they grow a full pineapple in just 1 or 2 months, while it takes about 6 months in our own garden. We don’t have to explain that our pineapples taste about 3 times better.
After Palmar Norte you will arrive in Rio Claro, where you can fill up your car for the last time, because it is time to leave the inhabited world?! Take the turn towards Golfito and after about 10 kilometers (6 miles) go left at a badly paved junction, towards Pavones. There is a sign, but hardly visible. After about 15 minutes you will reach a river which you can cross by bridge (very recent development). Don’t go in the water, because you will share it with some crocodiles.
After another 15 minutes, you come to Conte, after which it starts to get good! The road becomes unpaved and goes up. Follow the signs Pavones. From here it is just a matter of staying on the road, cross the bridges carefully and start to get used to ‘The Middle of Nowhere’! In Pavones follow the signs for the Tiskita Jungle Lodge. Continue on to the village of Punta Banco and drive on to the end of the road (before the road goes into the hills), where our small paradise is waiting.
If you left San José after 10 o’clock in the morning, you will probably have to use your lights for the last part of the drive. Okay, the drivers have arrived, now the others, starting with the bus passengers.
By Bus
From San José you can buy a ticket at the Tracopa Terminal (every taxi drivers knows where it is). It is best to buy one a day in advance, because, especially in the weekends, it can get crowded. Take the 07h00 (7 a.m.) bus to Golfito, which arrives there around 14h30 (2:30 p.m.). From Golfito take the bus to Pavones at 15h00 (3 p.m.). It leaves near the supermarket across the street from the hospital.
In case of a lack of time, you can jump off the bus at t-junction kilómetro 14 (between Golfito & Pavones) and get on the Pavones bus there. Whatever you do, make sure you are on that bus, because it only goes once a day to the Rancho Burica! The last stop of the bus is at the Rancho near Punta Banco, where you will be welcomed at around 18h00 (6 p.m.). If you need to do some shopping or just want to travel a little more relaxed, take the 05h00 (5 a.m) bus in San José and buy a ticket to Rio Claro.
Get out in Rio Claro, do your shopping and get on a local bus to Golfito (takes about 30 minutes) or take a taxi. You will arrive in Golfito well before 15h00 (3 p.m.). Ok, the bus people have arrived, it took quite a while, but they managed it in one day.
From Panama take the bus to the border, Paso Canoas, via David. Arrange all the necessary stamps in your passport and get on the bus to Laurel, which leaves at 15h00 (3 p.m.) [NOTE: Costa Rica is one hour behind Panama, so 16h00 (4 p.m.) Panama time]. In Laurel change busses and take the one to Conte. In Conte you have to get on the bus to Pavones (see above), which leaves around 16h30 (4:30 p.m.). If you missed your bus in Paso Canoas, take a taxi to Conte. The taxi is much faster than the bus, so you’ll be in Conte on time for the bus to Pavones.
What if you don’t want to sit in a bus the whole day? Vamos en avion!
By Plane There are three flights from San José to Golfito daily for about US $110 (one-way). You can book from your own country or in Costa Rica at SANSA (+506) 22219414 (www.flysansa.com). Because you fly along the coast, the view is great. The flight takes about an hour, so you leave a little later than the ‘bus people’. From Golfito you can, of course, take the bus, but while you are travelling in style, why not take a 4×4 taxi. It costs about US $70 and one and a half hours later you are at the Rancho Burica! Pura Vida, right?
De Rancho ligt vlak bij het dorp Punta Banco, ongeveer 60 km ten zuiden van Golfito aan de zuid-westkust van Costa Rica. Hieronder vind je de routebeschrijving per auto, per bus en per vliegtuig.
Per Auto
Allereerst is het al een hele klus om veilig uit San José te komen want het verkeer verloopt hier toch iets anders dan in het overgereguleerde Nederland? Zorg er eerst maar eens voor dat je een goede kaart hebt van San José, en van Costa Rica en dan nog is het redelijk ‘op goed geluk’:
Zorg dat je op de Avenida Central richting San Pedro komt en volg vanaf daar de borden Cartago. Voor Cartago ga je over op de borden San Isidro en als alles goed gaat rij je dan langzaam de bergen in (vergeet niet te tanken!). Probeer niet te veel in te halen op riskante stukken want het heet hier niet voor niets de ‘Cerro de la muerte’, oftewel ‘de pas des doods’…
Na tot 3400 meter geklommen te zijn (waar het wel degelijk fris en regenachtig geworden is!) wordt het tijd om af te dalen. Krantje onder het shirt, een aerodinamische houding aannemen en knallen maar! Rij niet te hard en pas op voor vallend gesteente want je huurbak staat bekend (d.w.z. bij verschillende Rancho-leden?) om zijn slechte wegligging! En je weet wat onze Oosterburen altijd zeggen: ‘Strasse nass, fuss vom gas!’
In San Isidro aangekomen rij je gewoon rechtdoor richting het volgende gehucht Palmar Norte. Onderweg passeer je nog de chemische ananasvelden van Del Monte waar ze met allerlei chemische middelen 1x in de 2 maanden per plant een volle ananas laten groeien, terwijl het op de Rancho toch echt zo’n 6 maanden duurt. We hoeven niet uit te leggen dat onze ananas ook 3x beter smaakt. Natuurlijk ecologisch toch, was het niet?
Aangekomen in Rio Claro tank je je wagen voor de laatste keer vol want het is tijd om de bewoonde wereld te verlaten… Neem de afslag naar Golfito en sla na ongeveer 10 kilometer bij een slechte T-kruising naar links richting Pavones. Er staat hier ook een bordje maar dit valt bijna niet op. Na ongeveer 15 minuten kom je bij een rivier die je sinds kort kan oversteken via een nieuwe brug. Niet pootje baden want er zitten hier kroko’s in de rivier!
Na vervolgens nog 15 minuten over een redelijk goede weg kom je in Conte. Nog 30 km! Na Conte wordt het leuk! De weg wordt onverhard en gaat omhoog richting Pavones. Vanaf hier is het gewoon een kwestie van op de weg blijven en voorzichtig de bruggetjes oversteken. Volg in Pavones de bordjes met Tiskita Jungle Lodge. Geniet alvast maar een beetje van The Middle of Nowhere! Where the streets have no name - zou Bono zingen en er mag ingehaakt worden, want we zijn er bijna… Mocht je toch een bordje missen, dan gewoon naar Punta Banco en aan het eind van deze slechte weg (voordat de weg de bergen in gaat) ligt het paradijsje op je te wachten.
Voor wie om een uur of 10 vanuit San Jose is vertrokken, je moet waarschijnlijk het laatste stukje nog net even je lichten aandoen. Paradise by the dashboardlight, was het niet? Zo, de automobilisten zijn er, nu de andere mensen nog, eerst de busgangers maar eens.
Per Bus
In San José koop je, het liefst een dag vantevoren, een busticket bij de Tracopa Terminal (iedere taxi-chauffeur weet deze te vinden). Doordeweeks kan je ook wel gewoon naar de terminal gaan, een uur voor vertrek en daar dan het ticket kopen, maar in het weekend is je kans op een plaatsje aanzienlijk kleiner en is een reservering wel aan te bevelen. Okay, vamos!
Je neemt de bus van 07.00 uur naar Golfito die daar omstreeks 14.30 zal arriveren. Vanuit Golfito neem je dan weer een andere bus naar Pavones welke om 15.00 vertrekt vanaf de terminal (is gewoon een supermarkt) schuin tegenover het Hospitaal. Je kan ook, in geval van tijdnood, eerder (bij de eerder beschreven T-kruising op 14 km na de afslag Golfito) uit de eerste bus springen en daar op deze bus springen (naar Pavones) zolang je maar zorgt dat je op de bus komt, want hij rijdt maar 1x per dag naar de Rancho! Het eindpunt van deze bus is Rancho Burica, Punta Banco waar je omstreeks 18.00 uur van harte welkom wordt geheten door een enthousiaste crew!
Moet je nog wat shoppen onderweg, of wil je wat relaxter reizen pak dan de bus van 05.00 uur vanaf San José, koop je ticket tot Rio Claro, stap daar ook uit (en shop wat) en stap over op de bus naar Golfito (deze gaat vrij regelmatig, maar een taxi is natuurlijk ook mogelijk) waar je dan omstreeks 13.00 uur aankomt. Vanuit Golfito volg je dan weer het andere schema.
Zo, de mensen die met de bus zijn aangekomen, hebben er een lange dag op zitten maar ze zijn er toch binnen 1 dag gekomen. Geen zin om de hele dag in de bus te zitten? Vamos en avion!
Vanuit Panama neem je de bus naar de grens, Paso Canoas, via David. Regel hier de nodige stempels voor in je paspoort en zorg dat je om 15.00 uur (LET OP: in Costa is het 1 uur vroeger dan in Panama, dus 16.00 uur Panama tijd) de bus naar Laurel hebt. In Laurel moet je overstappen op de bus naar Conte. In Conte kan je dan de bus naar Pavones pakken (zie boven), die daar rond 16.30 uur vertrekt. Mocht je in Paso Canoas de bus gemist hebben kan je ook een taxi nemen naar Conte voor een redelijke prijs. De taxi is veel sneller dan de bus, dus die haal je wel in.
Per Vliegtuig
Er zijn dagelijks 3 vluchten vanuit San José naar Golfito voor zo’n US$ 110 enkele reis. Je kan zowel in NL als hier in Costa boeken, je kan boards tot max. size 7′2″ meenemen. Doordat je recht over de kust vliegt is het uitzicht fantastisch en als je goed kijkt kan je de setjes zien binnen komen rollen!
Boekingen in NL lopen via ieder ANVR erkend reisburo terwijl je (in hotel!) het hier kan regelen bij de SANSA tel. (00-506) 2221.94.14 of (00-506) 2233.32.58. Boeken kan bij SANSA ook via het internet (www.flysansa.com). Zorg dan dat je een printer hebt, want je krijgt je ticket gewoon op je scherm, wat je moet uitprinten en meenemen naar Costa Rica.
Je vliegt er een uurtje over en kan dus wat later vertrekken dan de busboys. Vanuit Golfito naar Punta Banco kan je natuurlijk weer met de bus maar nu je toch in stijl aan het reizen bent kan je net zo goed een 4×4 taxi nemen. Dit kost je dan ook ongeveer US$ 70 en dan sta je anderhalf uur later uitgerust en wel op de Rancho. Pura Vida, toch?
